JUST FORUM REPORT

On the 30th July 2016, the International Movement for a Just World (JUST)  organized a forum entitled “Human Trafficking in the 21st Century”. The forum began at 10.30am and ended at 12.00pm

The speaker was Fatin Syahirah Zahari, an intern with JUST and a student of sociology and history from the International Islamic University Malaysia. Fatin spoke on  recent trends involving human trafficking of people and how this problem continously persists to be a transnational one which requires urgent attention to mitigate the human tragedy.

JUST Executive Committee member, Dr. Sharifah Shahirah, a Professor of International Relations at the Kolej Universiti Poly-Tech MARA, Kuala Lumpur, was the moderator for the discussions in the forum.

Fatin’s presentation highlighted on the various sources and reasons as to why Human Trafficking still happens and how there should be greater awareness on this issue especially in regards to Child Labour, Sexual Exploitation and Corruption. She had also highlighted the need of an effective and sustainable solution to this long-standing problem.

There was a very lively discussion among the participants who looked at  various ways to address the critical and moral dillemas surrounding human trafficking and how various social ills which contribute to this issue should be addressed in an effective and sustainable manner.

After the forum, there was a Raya Lunch, in celebration of the Hari Raya Festival, where the participants continued to mingle and engage with each other and discuss on various topics.

In total there were 28 participants who had attended the forum.

Special thanks  given to the JUST Interns for their assistance in organizing the event, especially the speaker and future scholar, Fatin Syahirah Zahari.
