1) At the Crossroads

Monograph - By: Chandra Muzaffar | No of Pages: 15 | Ebook Available Here

Short Description: Extracts from 'preface' - The title of this monograph embodies the essential thrust of the two essays that constitute this modest effort. In 'The Truth is Out' I argue that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Disengagement Plan announced in April 2004 confirms, more than any of his other previous moves, that he is not prepared to accept a truly independent, viable Palestinian State on the West Bank and Gaza with East Jerusalem as its capital. His Plan has brought the Israeli- Palestinian conflict to a crossroad. Do we go on believing that the Road Map and other such peace plans will lead to the creation of a Palestinian State living side by side with Israel or we ready to expose the link between Political Zionism and American Imperialism now reinforced by the Christian Right and struggle for justice and freedom for all the communities of the Middle East?

This question takes us to the second crossroad. Do the Palestinians continue their struggle for justice and freedom through the present armed uprising or should they explore in all earnestness the non-violent option? In other words, has the Palestinian struggle also arrived at a crossroad, as far as its means and methods are concerned? In the second essay in this monograph, an attempt is made to put forward the case for a non-violent struggle for Palestinian rights.

2) Islam & Non-Muslim Minorities

Monograph - By: Mudathir Abd al-Rahim | No of Pages: 28

Short Description: The success of Islam and classical Islamic civilisation stands out as a remarkable and, in many ways, unparalled achievement. And it is one which to this day may serve as a source of inspiration for all who are concerned with human rights and the promotion of humane and constructive relations between ethnically or culturally different peoples around the world. In the words of Count Leon Ostrorog: "Those Eastern thinkers of the ninth century laid down, on the basis of their theology, the principles of the Rights of Man, in those very terms, comprehending the rights of individual liberty, and of inviolability of person and property;...[those Eastern thinkers of old have also] expounded a doctrine of toleration of non-Muslim creeds so liberal that our West had to wait a thousand years before seeing equivalent principles adopted".

What are those Islamic principles of tolerance which Count Ostrorog (and many other scholars) have so highly praised? And to what extent have they been reflected in the actual conduct or practice of traditional Islamic societies? To what extent can it be said that the practice of contemporary Muslim states and societies constitute a continuum with that of their pre-modern predecessors?

This monograph seeks to highlight and illuminate the key features of Muslim tolerance and accomodation in the past and shows how many of those same principles still hold sway over a number of modern-day Muslim societies and nations.

3) Aung San Suu Kyi's Struggle - Its Principles And Strategy

Monograph - By: Mikio Oishi | No of Pages: 60

Short Description: In many ways, the struggle of Aung San Suu Kyi for democracy and human rights in the country since the 1990 State Law & Order Restoration Council (SLORC) crackdown on the National League for Democracy (NLD) is inspirational. It shows how an individual and a leader in Asia could harness the traditions and spiritual beliefs found in the country's culture and history and employ them to their fullest potential in the struggle against oppression and tyranny.

What is remarkable about Suu Kyi's struggle is that she evaluates Myanmar both by its own traditional standards, embedded in the teachings of Buddhism, and by the principles which form the kernel doctrines of civil society, which are to a large extent exemplified by Western societies. Her struggle shows that there are many things that the SLORC and certain other governments in Asia can do without and should discard from their political baggage, while at the same time absorbing wholesome virtues and practices that have been part and parcel of their countries social beliefs since time immemorial.

"It is to his credit that Dr. Mikio Oishi, who was offered the third JUST Fellowship, was able to draw out the principles and implications of Aung San Suu Kyi's struggle, culled from her activities and writings since her release from house arrest in 1995. He has added his own unique expertise to this study by taking a "conflict resolution" approach - a task in which he is most adept, as the reader will surely discover as s/he progresses through this monograph."

-Sanen Marshall (Co-ordinator of Publications) in the Preface.

4) The Western Media In Asia

Monograph - By: Jawid Laiq | No of Pages: 40

Short Description: The Western Media in Asia: Globalisation and Resistance is an insight into significant trends in reporting on Asian countries by leading media institutions within the region, trends which exhibit a slant targeting Asian countries especially for their alleged failure to uphold human rights. Since the perception of millions of people, not only in Asia but also in the West, are formed by their reports on events in the region, it should be the concern of each and every individual to discover some of the facts and fallacies contained in their coverage.

5) Dominance of the West Over the Rest (Ebook)

Monograph - By: JUST (compilation) | No of Pages: 216 | ISBN: 983-9861-02-6 | EBook Available Here

Short Description: mono_dominanceofthewest9 []The author of the essays that make up this volume have one thing in common. They are all friends of Mr. S.M. Mohamed Idris. In fact, Dominance of the West over the Rest is dedicated to him. It is a concern which has taken him to the helm of a number of Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs). Apart from being Chairman of the Just World Trust (JUST), he is also the Co-ordinator of Third World Network (TWN) and, at the same time, President of both the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) and Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM). His active involvement in these NGOs reflects an unswerving committment to a just world - which he has always believed is only possible if Western global dominance is brought to an end. The Just World Trust (JUST) expresses its deepest gratitude to all the paper-writers. In spite of busy schedules, they found the time to produce new papers or revise existing manuscripts. Many of the papers were written in 1994; others arrived in 1995. However, a few of Idris' friends who were invited to contribute were not able to make the deadline. The sentiments expressed by the various paper-writers, it should be emphasised, do not necessarily represent JUST's views. Our contributors have elected to write on different themes of their own choice which are either directly or indirectly connected to the larger question of Western dominance. The unenviable task of persuading contributors to send in their pieces - which takes up a lot of time in collective efforts to this sort - was left to Sanen Marshall, Deputy Co-ordinator (Publications), JUST. Without Sanen's energy and dedication which was of tremendous value at every stage in the preparation of the book, Dominance of the West over the Rest may not have seen the light of day.

6) Global Ethic or Global Hegemony (Ebook)

Monograph - By: Chandra Muzaffar | No of Pages: 201 | ISBN: 1-901919-50-1 | Ebook Available Here

Short Description: mono_globalethnic [] Global Ethnic or Global Hegemony? is an important book. It addresses one of the most critical questions facing humanity today: Is global peace possible without overcoming the challenge of global dominance and control by an elite is one of the major direct and indirect causes of contemporary wars and conflicts. Hegemony explains the war in Iraq and the continuing conflict between Israel and Palestine. It is also responsible for the widening gap between the global rich and the global poor which in turn has given rise to global tensions. Even the fears of global cultural and intellectual imperialism are related to global hegemony. As long as there is global hegomeny, the author argues, a just world in which humanity is held together by shared universal values, principles and standards will remain a mere dream. In other worlds, global hegemony negates a global ethic.

7) Hegemonic Terror: The Conquest of Iraq (Ebook)

Short Description: mono_hegemonicterror []Dr. Chandra Muzaffar, a political scientist, is currently President of the International Movement for a Just World (JUST). A world renowned intellectual, he has written on Malaysian Politics and society; inter-religious dialogue, human rights and international relation. Author of Human Rights and the New World Order and other books.

8) Human Rights and the New World Order (Ebook)

Monograph - By: Chandra Muzaffar | No of Pages: 194 | ISBN: 983-9861-00-X | Ebook Available Here

Short Description: "mono_newworldorder [] Perhaps the most powerful point that comes out of the book... is the question of why we consider it a violation of human rights when a national government hinders the development of its citizens, but that we don't when the international system does exactly the same thing. It is in this sense that Dr. Muzaffar's critique is so necessary in this age." AMPO Japan-Asia Quarterly Review Vol.24 No.4

"Every person who cares and yearns for a just world order should read this important book written by someone who has probed deeply into the issues at stake and written cogently on them." Third World Resurgence No.45

"Francis Fukuyama should read this-and so should anyone else who wants to know what the New World Order is like on the receiving end... Muzaffar is one of the most thoughtful interpreters of international relations writing today, additionally important because his viewpoint (from the South) is so rarely available in the mainstream international relations literature." The Journal of Asian Studies

This book demonstrates that the New World Order will not protect the human rights of the vast majority of humankind because the power structure of the NWO is palpably unjust. A minority in the North controls and dominates global politics. In the process, this minority has narrowed the meaning of human rights itself to individual civil and political rights so as to perpetuate its dominance. A compelling argument is made for a more holistic approach to human rights that gives equal attention to economic, social and cultural rights besides civil and political rights.

9) JUST Viewpoints (Ebook)

Monograph - By: JUST (complilation) | No of Pages: 156 | Ebook Available Here

Short Description: mono_justviewpoints [] For the first time in human history, a global system is emerging. It is going to have a profound impact upon the life of each and every human being on this planet.

But it is an impact which will be more negative than positive. For what is emerging is an unjust global system. It is a system which allows a privileged minority located largely in the North, to dominate and control the world. It is a system in which the vast majority of humankind will remain poor and powerless. It is a system which panders to the unbridled greed of a few but fails to provide for the basic needs of the many.

The JUST WORLD TRUST (JUST) is a response to that challenge. It is because of our commitment to a just world that we have decided to establish a Trust - a Trust which seeks, in a modest way, to develop global awareness of the injustices within the existing system with the aim of evolving an alternaive international order which will enhance human dignity and social justice. More specifically, our primary goal is to establish the spiritual and intellectual foundation of a just world.

10) Peace Dividend? (Ebook)

Monograph - By: Jennifer Maurin | No of Pages: 111 | ISBN: 983-9861-01-8 | Ebook Available Here

Short Description: mono_peacedividend []The idea of a New World Order fired the imagination and hope of many who thought they could finally see peace dividends in the near distance and beyond that, the eventual demise of the arms proliferation that had been sustained by the mania of the Cold War.

But the so-called New World Order, as humanity was to soon discover, was but another chapter in the very old story of injustice, exploitation and power imbalance that roughly sums up the relationship between the South and the North for the last 500 years.

The South remains at the mercy of the elites of the North who, as history has shown, holds no qualms about resorting to armed violence in order to maintain their economic, political and social dominance over the peoples and lands of the South.

Cold war rivalries for the resources in the South spawned a build-up of arms that turned the regions into killing fields. The militarisation of many a Southern country owed much to Cold War politics and the arms trade that has come to be an integral part of the North's economies. The economic and social degradation that continues to haunt a large part of Africa, Latin America and Asia is largely due to the facts that billions are spent on weapons instead of food, healthcare and education. As long as this injustice, imbalance of power and manipulation by the North exists, the arms build-up will continue to plague the South and put the planet in peril.

11) In Human Wrongs (Ebook)

Monograph - By: JUST (complilation) | No of Pages: 298 | ISBN: 983-9861-04-2 | Ebook Available Here

Short Description: mono_humanwrongs []This book is a product of an international conference held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on the theme "Rethinking Human Rights".

There is an urgent need today to examine critically human rights concepts, interpretations and practices spawned by mainstream Western society. Within the human rights community in not only the West but also in the non-Western world there is very little questioning of how the dominant centres of power in the West conceive of human rights and how they approach human rights issues especially in non-Western societies.

The truth is that the dominent West's human rights record taken as a whole is appalling. In the midst of all the euphoria about the triumph of human rights and democracy in the post-cold war era it is often forgotten that the greatest violations of human rights un history - and indeed right up to the present - have been committed not by some tinpot despot in the non-Western world but by dominant centres of power in the West itself.

What is equally significant, the book, while concentrating upon Western global dominance and its impact upon human rights, also chastises elites in the non-Western world who have no compunctions about suppressing the rights of their own people.

Sections of the broad discussion also contain ideas on spiritual and moral values that are so necessary today for a rejuvenattic view on human rights.
