INTERNATIONAL MOVEMENT FOR A JUST WORLD (JUST)

Ahmad Azam Abdul Rahman was president of ABIM, one of the most influential Islamic Movements in Southeast Asia, for eight years from 1997 to 2005. ABIM, with a membership of over 100,000, operates hundreds of Islamic schools throughout Malaysia. It has produced national leaders of high caliber, including professionals in politics, business, government and private institutions.

Ahmad Azam is the Chairman of Global Peace Mission (GPM) The Global Peace Mission, a coalition of seventy-seven (77) non-governmental organizations (NGO) in Malaysia, is a humanitarian-relief organization that provide relief assistance, and alleviates humanitarian crisis in areas hard hit by war and natural disasters or calamities. GPM has operated in Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Kashmir, Palestine, Sri Lanka, South Thailand, South Philippines, Timor Leste and lately in Aceh, Indonesia. Its forerunner, the Malaysian Relief International (MRI), was prominently involved in providing relief assistance to war victims in the Balkans (Bosnia-Herzegovina) in the Nineties. GPM provides relief and rehabilitation assistance in the form of foodstuff, clothing, educational materials, medical (health and sanitation) and orphanage. GPM also coordinates with other international relief agencies in certain areas of common concern.

Ahmad Azam was born in suburban Kuala Lumpur in 1960. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas, USA in 1986 with a degree of Master in Business Administration (MBA) with emphasis on Management. He finished his Bachelor’s degree at Indiana State University, USA, major in Marketing, Management and Economics in 1984; and his Diploma in Public Administration at MARA Institute of Technology, Shah Alam, Selangor in 1981.

Other positions held:
  1. Elected member of the Founding Executive Committee, Union of World Islamic NGOs, at the inaugural meeting in Istanbul, April 30 - May1, 2005.
  2. Elected Board Member of the Kuala Lumpur Society for Transparency International (KLSTI) for two three-year terms. (from March 2,000 – March 2005). KLSTI is an NGO advocating policy changes in fighting corruption in Malaysia.
  3. Elected Executive Committee Member of the International Movement for a Just World (JUST) for the 2004 - 2007 term. JUST is a well-known NGO that advocates social justice at the global level.
  4. Appointed by the Minister of Youth and Sports Member of the Malaysian Youth Consultative Council for the year 2003 - 2004, in recognition of his service in leading an influential youth organization in the country.
  5. Member of the Social Reform Movement dialogue.
